The Web has come a long way in the last ten years, but the dawn of electronic commerce opens up new possibilities previously not thought possible. It is not only about ordering CDs, records, or books. This has been going on for several years, and some companies have made a great success of it.
One such spin off from the above, for publishing industry is to use the Web for exchange of data in a format that is not vendor-specific and can be displayed in any device. XML (Extensible Markup Language) is one of them.
The digital content you read (a "paperless" version of a book, article or other document) is called an OEB publication.
The physical appliance used to render an OEB publication is called a reading device examples of reading devices include dedicated "eBook" readers, personal computers (either desktop or portable), or a palm size "personal digital assistants".
The combination of software and hardware that processes OEBPS content and presents it to a user is called a reading system. (The OEBPS specification does not require that the reading system be completely contained in the reading device; a reading system may involve processing of content on other computers.)
eBooks, therefore gives users a powerful and portable access to vast amount of
information. eBook is a new innovative medium of content distribution and now being increasingly preferred by publishers.
